Want to sell your car for more than the instant buyers offer? We talk a lot on this site about preparing your vehicle for sale and how professional preparation pays for itself. But we thought it was time to put our money where our mouth is and share a real example. One of our own cars.
This is a grey Volvo XC40 T4 R-Design AWD Auto, registered in Brighton in March 2019 and sold in January 2026 with just over 40,000 miles on the clock. That works out at under 6,000 miles a year. It wasn’t a customer car, either. This one belonged to family. Basically, the way we approached it is exactly what we’d recommend to anyone who wants to protect their investment and get top money when they come to sell.

January 2026. Nearly seven years old, 40,000 miles, and still looking the part.
Day One: The Dealer Did Us No Favours
The XC40 was collected brand new from the Volvo dealership in March 2019. Before collection, we’d asked the dealer not to remove the protective coverings or wash the car because we wanted to handle the preparation ourselves. They ignored us. As a result, by the time we got the car, the dealership had already stripped the protective film, run it through their wash process, and left the usual calling card: swirl marks and wash scratches across factory-fresh paintwork.
Similarly, if you’ve ever collected a new car and thought “this doesn’t look quite right in the sunlight,” you’re not imagining things. In fact, dealer prep is rarely done with the care your new car deserves. This is something we see regularly, though, and it’s one of the reasons we always recommend having new vehicles professionally prepared before the first proper wash cycle begins.
8 hours of correctional machine polishing. On a brand new car.
That’s what it took to undo the damage from a standard dealer wash.
Once the paintwork was back to where it should have been from factory, we sealed it with a Williams Ceramic H10 coating. That’s where the real story begins.
Why We Chose Ceramic Coating From New
Applying ceramic protection to a new car is the single best investment you can make in your vehicle’s appearance. The Williams H10 ceramic coating bonds to the paintwork and creates a hard, hydrophobic layer that protects against UV damage, bird lime, tree sap, road salt, and general environmental contamination.

In addition, the bigger benefit is how much easier the car is to maintain afterwards. As a result, dirt doesn’t bond as aggressively to a coated surface. Washes are quicker. Meanwhile, the paint stays glossier for longer between cleans. And when you eventually come to sell your car for more than you expected, you’re not starting from a position of six years of accumulated damage. Instead, you’re working with paintwork that’s been shielded from the worst of it.
We offer Williams Ceramic coatings at various levels. The H10 was applied once at the start and then looked after properly from that point on.
It’s Not Just About the Coating
Applying ceramic protection is only part of what we do. With over twenty years in the trade, what really matters is knowing what to look for. Is the paintwork actually perfect? Has the dealer done a rushed job? Have any smart repairs been carried out before handover? We’ve seen brand new cars with bumper resprays and touch-ups on stone chips that shouldn’t exist at delivery mileage. However, most buyers would never spot these things.
This is why we never recommend paint, glass, and fabric protection systems applied by dealerships.
They have no real interest in correcting imperfections or even bringing them to your attention. If anything, a quick coating over the top hides the evidence.
As a result, our customers bring their brand new cars straight to us. We carry out a full inspection, provide a detailed condition report, and if the car needs additional work, that report becomes evidence to take back to the dealership. If your vehicle is on a lease or finance agreement, this matters even more. The leasing company will pour over every mark at return. Consequently, having a documented baseline from day one protects you financially at both ends of the deal.
Six Years of Regular Maintenance
This is where the real lesson sits. Ceramic coating isn’t a magic shield you apply and forget about. It needs looking after. The way we looked after this XC40 was dead simple: regular MAX Maintain valets throughout the entire period of ownership.

The MAX Maintain service takes around 90 minutes and covers the essentials: a thorough interior vacuum, dash and compartments wiped clean, glass polished inside and out, a safe exterior wash, and the car dried and buffed properly. It’s not flashy. It’s not a deep detail. But done regularly, it keeps a well-maintained car in excellent condition and stops dirt, grime, and wear from building up to the point where you need expensive corrective work later on.
That’s what people miss. We didn’t do anything heroic with this car. No annual deep details. No yearly paint corrections. We just maintained it. Consistently. Properly. Using the right methods and products every time.
This is exactly what our Monthly Maintenance Club 20 is built around. A regular professional valet on a simple monthly plan that keeps your car in excellent condition year-round. No thinking about it, no forgetting to book. Just consistent care that protects your investment and keeps that new car feeling going for as long as you own it.
The car was always kept smoke-free and pet-free, which obviously helps, but the regular professional maintenance is what kept the interior looking like it had barely been used and the paintwork looking fresh throughout.
Preparing for Sale: Less Work Than You’d Think
When the decision was made to sell in January 2026, we booked the car in for a final MAX Maintain valet with the addition of Autoglym SRP, a polish that restores gloss and adds a layer of temporary wax protection over the ceramic coating.
That’s it. No full detail, no paint correction, and no deep interior shampoo. The car simply didn’t need it because it had been properly looked after from day one. This is the payoff of consistent maintenance, and it’s exactly how you sell your car for more. When you come to sell, you’re not scrambling to undo years of neglect. You’re just putting a final shine on something that’s already in great condition.
The Result: January 2026
This is how the XC40 looked after its final MAX Maintain valet, ready for AutoTrader photos and viewings. Nearly seven years old, over 40,000 miles, and still presenting like a car that’s been properly looked after from day one.

Nearly seven years, over 40,000 miles. This is what consistent professional maintenance looks like.
The AutoTrader Listing
We listed the car on AutoTrader at ÂŖ20,483 as a private sale. The advert was honest and to the point: two careful owners from new, full service history, HPI clear, two keys, ULEZ compliant. MOT completed with no advisories. We made sure to mention the Williams Ceramic H10 coating in the description because it’s a real selling point that informed buyers will recognise.

The actual AutoTrader advert. Listed at ÂŖ20,483 as a private sale.
The 19-inch diamond-cut alloys presented well but weren’t perfect. There was some minor kerb damage that could have been sorted with our alloy wheel refurbishment service. We made a deliberate decision to list the car without doing this work, knowing we could address it in negotiation if needed.
The Sale: Patience and a Simple Strategy
Selling a car privately in January isn’t ideal. It’s traditionally one of the quieter months. Everyone’s skint after Christmas, the weather’s miserable, and people aren’t in the market for big purchases. We had realistic expectations and a clear strategy: list at ÂŖ20,483 and plan to reduce the asking price by ÂŖ100 per week until it sold.
The advert ran for six weeks. In that entire time, we had just two phone calls. Not exactly a flood of interest. But when you’re selling privately, you only need one serious buyer.
The first person who came to view the car bought it.
They could see the car had been properly looked after. The grey paintwork still had depth and gloss after nearly seven years and 40,000 miles. The interior was immaculate. There were no hidden surprises, no damp smells, no suspicious touch-ups trying to hide problems. What you saw was what you got. A straight, honest, well-maintained car.
The only negotiation point was the alloy wheels. The 19-inch diamond-cut alloys had picked up some kerb marks over the years. Nothing unusual for a car of this age, but not perfect. Rather than offering to have the work done (which would have meant delays and the buyer having to trust it would be done properly), we just knocked a fair amount off the asking price to cover it. The buyer appreciated the honesty, paid ÂŖ20,183, and the deal was done without any fuss.
The Numbers Tell the Story

What dealers sell for
We listed at ÂŖ20,483 and sold for ÂŖ20,183 after a small reduction for the alloy wheel kerb marks rather than having the work done. That’s ÂŖ1,867 above the typical private sale value and just ÂŖ596 below what a dealer would stick on the windscreen.
To put a number on it, we got ÂŖ5,326 more than an instant buyer like We Buy Any Car would have offered. Five thousand, three hundred and twenty-six pounds. For a car that cost us just ÂŖ150+VAT to prepare at the time.
That’s not a rounding error. That’s a holiday.
And the reason we could command that price? Condition. Six years of consistent professional maintenance, ceramic protection from new, and a car that presented so well the buyer had nothing to knock the price down for. Apart from four alloy wheels that needed a cosmetic refresh.
What If We Hadn’t Bothered?
Let’s flip this around. Imagine we’d done nothing for six years. No ceramic coating. No regular maintenance. Just the odd hand wash in the drive and a hoover when it got embarrassing.
By the time you come to sell a car that’s been treated like that, you’re looking at a very different proposition. The paintwork is oxidised and covered in swirl marks. The interior has ground-in dirt in the carpets, stained seats, and that general smell of a car that hasn’t been properly cleaned. Tree sap and bird lime have etched into unprotected paint. The wheels are caked in baked-on brake dust.
At that point, getting the car presentable for sale isn’t a quick maintenance valet. It’s a proper job. You’re looking at something like our MAX WAX Prestige package (around ÂŖ450+VAT at the time of writing) for six hours of work including machine polishing. On top of that, possibly even our Detailing Studio package (around ÂŖ600+VAT at the time of writing) if the paint needs serious correction. Add alloy wheel refurbishment and potentially headlight restoration on top.
And even after all that, you’re still unlikely to achieve the same result. You’re recovering lost ground rather than maintaining a strong position. A six-year-old car that’s been professionally maintained from new simply presents differently to one that’s had a last-minute deep clean. Experienced buyers can tell. Instant buyers definitely can. Their inspectors are trained to spot every flaw and adjust their offer accordingly.
With this XC40, the total investment in sale preparation was ÂŖ150+VAT at the time. The car sold for ÂŖ20,183. Over five thousand pounds more than instant buyers would have offered and nearly two thousand above typical private sale value. The maths speaks for itself.

This Approach Isn’t For Everyone
Not everyone cares about keeping their car in showroom condition, and that’s fine. Those people can still come to us when it’s time to sell. Even without years of maintenance, professional preparation helps you sell your car for more than you would otherwise.
But if you’re spending ÂŖ40,000+ on a new car, you probably want that new car feeling to last. On British roads, rain, road salt, tree sap, and motorway grime can make a new car look tired within months. The smart owners think about the end game. They enjoy excellent condition throughout ownership and get more back when they sell.
This XC40 cost just over ÂŖ40,000 new and sold for just over ÂŖ20,000 nearly seven years later. In other words, that’s roughly 50% depreciation across the entire ownership period.
When you factor in that the car looked and felt fantastic for every one of those seven years, that’s cheap motoring by anyone’s measure.
