Call us before it dries.

First, breathe

It’s probably not as bad as you think

Most people who call us about a paint spill have already convinced themselves the car is ruined. It rarely is. What it needs is the right advice quickly, and someone who has dealt with it before.

  • Wet or driedWet paint sits on top of the fibres and can usually be extracted completely. Dried paint has started to bond — harder, but not automatically hopeless.
  • What kind of paintEmulsion is forgiving. Gloss and other oil-based paints cure rather than dry, so the window closes faster. Floor and masonry paints are the toughest of the lot.
  • Where it landedCarpet drinks it in, leather buys you time, and headlining is the trickiest surface in the car. Each one is a different job.
  • What you do nextA spill that’s been left alone and kept wet beats one that’s been scrubbed at, every single time. Step away from the kitchen roll.
When you call

You’ll get a straight answer

We’ll tell you exactly what to do right now to protect the car before we get to you. We won’t talk you into a job that isn’t needed, and we won’t give you false hope about one that isn’t recoverable.

Why speed matters

Wet paint comes out. Dried paint gets complicated.

Wet paint hasn’t bonded to anything yet. With the right equipment it can usually be lifted and extracted completely — several of the cars further down this page had five-litre tubs go over inside, and left the studio looking like nothing ever happened.

Once it dries, it bonds. Emulsion can often still be softened and worked out of fabric and carpet. Oil-based paints don’t so much dry as cure — they harden chemically, and the recovery window closes much faster. Heat accelerates all of it, which is why the car goes in the shade and not in the sun.

Already dried?

It depends — and we’ll say so honestly

This is where most callers actually are: you didn’t see it happen, or you thought it would wipe off and it didn’t. Dried is harder, not a write-off. What matters now is the paint type, the surface, and how long it’s been there. Whatever you do, don’t scrape or scrub it — send us photos on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you what’s possible before you commit to anything.

Know your enemy

What spilled matters

The type of paint decides how it behaves, how fast it sets, and what it takes to remove it safely.

  • Emulsion (water-based)The most common household paint and the most forgiving. Stays workable longest when wet, and even dried there’s usually a reasonable chance of recovery from fabric and carpet.
  • Gloss, satinwood, eggshell (oil-based)These cure rather than simply dry — they harden chemically over time. Removal needs solvents, and the wrong solvent on the wrong surface causes permanent damage. Speed is critical.
  • Floor and masonry paintDesigned to be durable and resistant, which makes them the hardest to get out of soft furnishings. In some cases the affected material can’t be fully recovered.
  • Trade and specialist paintsIf you carry paints, primers or coatings for work, call the moment a spill happens. Formulations vary widely and some need specific treatment. We’ve dealt with most of them.

Not sure what it is? Photograph the tin as well as the spill and send both to us on WhatsApp.

Where it landed

Different surfaces, different jobs

  • Carpet and boot liningFabric absorbs paint quickly, which is why speed matters so much. Wet paint on carpet can usually be extracted with the right equipment; dried is harder but often still treatable, particularly emulsion. Thick pile holds paint deeper than flat-weave boot lining.
  • Fabric seatsAbsorb like carpet, but with foam underneath — and if paint soaks through the fabric before it’s treated, the foam is affected too. In the worst cases the seat cover comes off and is cleaned separately.
  • Leather and vinylBetter news. Paint sits on the surface rather than soaking in, so you have slightly more time. Some solvents wreck leather finishes though, so it still needs doing by someone who knows what they’re doing.
  • Hard plastics and dashboardNothing soaks in, but everything scratches if scraped. Dried paint on plastic can often be removed cleanly without a mark — with the right method.
  • HeadliningThe trickiest surface in the car. The material is delicate and the foam backing compresses easily, so we always want to see headlining damage in person before advising on the likely outcome.

Paint spill reviews

“A pot of paint tipped over in my car on the way home. I called MAX WAX straight away and Matt answered. He was calm, reassuring, and gave me clear advice on what to do before it dried. He also booked me in immediately and arranged a courtesy car. When I arrived, Tristan and his team took over and did a fantastic job fixing the mess. From the first phone call to picking up my car, I felt like I was in safe hands.”

We contacted Max Wax after a 5L paint can spilled in our car boot. They responded quickly and booked us in for the following day. We are so impressed with the results - the car looks brand new again and the team worked incredibly hard to rectify the damage from the paint spill (which had gone everywhere; photos just show one part). They also updated us regularly during the day which was appreciated. We wouldnโ€™t hesitate to recommend Max Wax to anyone. Thank you so much!

Honestly, this team went above and beyond for us when paint was accidentally splashed all over our relatively new car. Their service was absolutely outstanding, and nothing was ever too much trouble. Every single team member we dealt with was kind, friendly and professional. What felt like a complete disaster to us was handled by them with such care, patience and incredible attention to detail. They completely put our minds at ease and did an amazing job restoring the car. We would 1000% use Max Wax again (although hopefully weโ€™ll never have to see quite that much paint on our car again! 😂). A special thank you to Jordan for being so kind, reassuring me that it could be fixed, and taking such great care of us throughout. It really was hugely appreciated. Thank you to the whole team!

A pot of paint tipped over in my car on the way home... not exactly the kind of surprise you want. I called MAX WAX straight away and Matt answered. He was calm, reassuring, and gave me clear advice on what to do before it dried. He also booked me in immediately and arranged a courtesy car. When I arrived, Tristan and his team took over and did a fantastic job fixing the mess - you can tell from the before & after photos. From the first phone call to picking up my car, I felt like I was in safe hands. Great service, great people.

Wow! Max power couldnโ€™t have been more helpful. I managed to spill a 5 litre tub of paint all over the interior of my Kia Sportage. A quick phone call and they rearranged work for me to be able to drop off the next day and give me a courtesy car! Two days later I have a car as good as new. My biggest fears of devaluing the car completely gone. These guys are truly amazing! Thank you Max Power and all your wonderful staff. You are amazing

Max Wax were a pleasure to work with, I would highly recommend. I spilt 5L of paint all over the back seats of the car and into the electrics underneath. I was shocked with the outcome, you wouldn't know any paint had spilt and it looked better than when I took it in. They also took out all of the scratches and the car was gleaming. The service was 5 star quality, they gave me daily updates on the progress on the car to give me peace of mind (I was so worried about the electrics etc). Lovely people and top quality service, I am very very happy with the outcome and will be using Max Wax again.

What it costs

We assess first. Then we quote.

Every job is different. The paint type, how long it’s been there, and what surface it landed on all change what’s possible — so we don’t give fixed quotes over the phone, because nobody honest can.

Send us photos on WhatsApp and we’ll tell you what we think can be done and what it will cost. No hard sell, no inflated expectations.

The honest bit

If it’s beyond saving, we’ll say so

We won’t take a job on just to have it. If the damage isn’t recoverable, you’ll hear it from us first — along with what your options are.

While it’s with us

You’re kept in the loop

Progress updates while the work is done, and a courtesy car can often be arranged so a paint spill doesn’t take you off the road.

For next time

How to transport paint safely

If you’re reading this before disaster strikes, here’s how to avoid it.

  • Put the tin in a cardboard box that fits snugly — no room to roll or tip
  • Put the box in the footwell, not on a seat or in the boot where it can slide
  • Wedge it in place with something solid
  • If possible, transport paint in a vehicle you’re less attached to

Common questions

Straight answers

What if the paint has already dried?

This is the situation most people with a paint spill are actually in. The honest answer is: it depends. Dried paint is harder to remove than wet paint, but it is not automatically a write-off. What matters is the type of paint, the surface it landed on, and how long it has been there.

Water-based emulsion is the most recoverable even when dry — it can often be softened and extracted from fabric and carpet without permanent damage. Gloss, satinwood and other oil-based paints harden as they cure, so the window closes faster and removal is more involved. Whatever the situation, don’t scrape or scrub it yourself — you risk grinding it deeper into the fibres or scratching hard surfaces. Send us photos and we’ll tell you honestly what we think is possible before you commit to anything.

Can I have a go at cleaning it myself first?

Please don’t. Rubbing or wiping spreads paint deeper into fabric and carpet fibres and can turn a recoverable spill into a permanent one. The two most useful things you can do cost nothing: keep the spill wet with a damp towel, and keep the car cool and out of the sun until we’ve spoken.

Does it matter where in the car it spilled?

Yes. Carpet and fabric absorb quickly, so speed matters most there. Seats have foam underneath that can be affected if paint soaks through. Leather, vinyl and hard plastics hold paint on the surface, which buys time — but the wrong solvent or a scrape can do permanent damage. Headlining is the most delicate surface in the car and we always assess it in person.

Do you do emergency call-outs?

Yes. Call 01903 233449 and we’ll advise straight away whether an emergency call-out is needed or whether the car is safe to bring to us. We cover Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire and Kent, and travel further across the South East for the jobs that need it.

The sooner you call, the more we can save

Keep it wet, keep it cool, and ring us. The advice is free, whatever you decide to do next.
